Do’s and Don’ts of Packing and Moving

You can either hire a moving company to pack for you or do it yourself and save some money.  Keep in mind that if you hired the best moving company your area, they will reimburse any damages they made during a move.  Packing yourself can lead to a little damage during the process, but it doesn’t have to be if you follow these do’s and don’ts of packing.

1.  Do…Purchase the right materials for the job

Things you need:

  1. Packing Paper – This is a special paper for packing into boxes.  I know you’re tempted to use the newspaper but it will leave ink stains if you do.  Packing paper has the strength and softness this kind of job requires.
  2. Packing Tape – Buy the right kind of tape.  Scotch, Masking, and Painter’s tape aren’t strong enough to secure the boxes and will lead to boxes breaking.
  3. Boxes – You don’t need go out and buy new boxes.  It’s okay to pack used boxes but make sure they are sturdy and don’t have any tears or signs of deterioration.
  4. Permanent Markers – Have a set of different colors handy for labeling each box for which room it belongs in.
  5. Bubble Wrap and Peanuts – They can be messy but are the right material for the job when you are packing up delicate items such as china.

2.  Do…Pack Personal a Bag

Make sure to pack two weeks worth of clothing and supplies.  This will be your travel size clothing and hygeniene bag to used until you’re finished most of the unpacking.  Include items you use on a daily basis like toothepaste, towels, soap, cell phone charger, and any medications.

3. Do…Pack a Supply Bag

Pack the essentials you’ll need for the first couple of days like toilet paper, cleaning supplies, pans, paper plates, sheets for the bed, etc.

4. Do…Clean it

Before you pack anything into boxes, clean it first. Otherwise, you’ll bring the dust and dirt that settled from your old home to your new one.  Also, when it comes to old and dirty things, think of what you could leave behind or throw away.  Your moving company will charge based on the weight and space your belongings take up in the truck so you can save some money by getting rid of things you may not really need

5. Do…Color code your boxes

Now that you’ve cleaned everything as you’ve packed it, label the boxes with either colored packing tape, labels, and/or markers.  Unless you’ve hired the best moving company in your area, they won’t pay much attention to the scribble on the boxes anyway.  By color coding each room you make it easy for the movers to get the right boxes in the right room.

7. DO…Pack and label everything

As your packing items inside boxes, label them so you know what’s inside.  Make sure to allow yourself plenty of time to pack everything before the movers arrive.  I know someone who procrastinated and was throwing her unpacked things into black garbage bags as the movers were taking the boxes she packed onto the truck.  Leave yourself plenty of time to finish before your movers arrive.

6. Don’t…pack small things into boxes directly

Use small bags like you’d use for sandwiches and label them with the name of the small things you’re putting in it. How you organized your old house will be different from your new house and one of the most frustrating things about moving is not being able to find something small in a sea of clutter.

8. Don’t…Bring important papers with you

Keep all important documents with you in a file folder, just to be extra safe.
